SAD DAY

A sad and surreal day in my hometown Oslo and home country of Norway. Our thoughts and hearts go out to all the victims of the Oslo bombing and the horrendous mass killing at the island of Utøya outside of Oslo on Friday July 22, 2011.

PERFECT ANGEL

The tragic death of Minnie Riperton on July 12, 1979 - 32 years ago today - silenced one of the truly great voices of American soul music. She is remembered for her wonderful musical contributions featuring an amazing voice which could span more than five octaves and reach a very high pitch.

Minnie started her musical career as a backup singer for a number of great artists signed to the legendary Chess label, such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis and Muddy Waters. While at Chess, she also sang lead vocals for the psychedelic soul band Rotary Connection, best known for its spiritual soul anthem I Am the Black Gold of the Sun.

The song was remade by the Masters at Work for their Nuyorican Soul album released in 1997. Here's the 1971 original.

Minnie kept some of the psychedelic soul sound for her first solo album Come to My Garden, especially for the lovely track Les Fleur.

It took four years before the second solo album Perfect Angel was released. It contains Minnie's greatest hit Lovin' You. The chorus beautifully brings out her amazingly high-pitched voice.

Other gems from Perfect Angel include the opening track Reasons, Take a Little Trip, The Edge of a Dream, Every Time He Comes Around and the title track. In 1975, the third solo album Adventures in Paradise was released. Here's the title track retouched by Scratchandsniff.

Other notable songs from the album Adventures in Paradise include Baby This Love I Have and Simple Things - not to mention Inside My Love, which was later picked up by Quentin Tarantino for the soundtrack to the movie Jackie Brown. Here are some recent re-edits.

Minnie's final album was Love Lives Forever, released posthumously in 1980 and completed by bringing in other soul singers. Favorite tracks include Here We Go as well as the more funky Strange Affair.

NUMBER ONE

You're My Number One is a club classic by Radiance featuring Andrea Stone on vocals. It was released in 1983 on Are'nBe Records, a small dance music label which only put out a few 12-inches. Another Are'nBe club classic is Fresh Band - Come Back Lover.

Here's the dub mix of the Radiance 12-inch.

The Munga track You're Mine pretty much leaves the Radiance original intact, adding in some percussions and tightening the beat a bit. It can be downloaded from the Munga web site.

You're My Number One was sampled by Ray Mang for the track Number One, a favorite jam back in the 90s.

Two more versions... The Osvaldo Wilson edit and the Murky Waters edit, which can be downloaded from the players below.

LUTHER

Six years today since a truly great soul singer passed away. Luther Vandross (April 20, 1951 – July 1, 2005) released his most memorable songs in the 80s. The big break came with the Italian-American disco outfit Change. Luther did lead vocals on several songs, including the all time fave Glow of Love. Here's the Leroc Sportif edit.

This gem features Luther at his finest. In his own words: "This is the most beautiful song I've ever sung in my life." After working with Change for the debut album Glow of Love, Luther recorded the solo album Never Too Much in 1981. The title track is another gem. Here's the Scratchandsniff re-rub.

In 1982, Luther produced the Aretha Franklin album Jump to It. The title track was Aretha's first hit single in 5 years and has a definite 80s funk feel. Here's the original version as well as a more recent re-edit.
